Be annoyed no more

Last night I couldn’t sleep. I woke up in the middle of the night and everything started annoying me.


First of all there was the fact that I couldn’t sleep, but then I also started getting annoyed with:

  • the sounds from outside,

  • a blinking light of the smoke detector,

  • the temperature,

  • the sheets,

  • everything! grrrr

That’s when I knew, I have been neglecting my meditation practice. Meditation helps to put things into perspective, clear out the mental clutter and it helps to make sure you can enjoy the present moment, without wanting everything to be different. With meditation we can learn to accept the conditions around us that we cannot change, not get so emotional about everything.


And that leads to a much calmer state of mind. So what did I do when I couldn’t fall asleep?

  • I got up,

  • drank some water,

  • sat on the couch,

  • and meditated for 10 minutes.

Afterwards I went back to bed, feeling a little bit more calm and less irritated, and I could drift back into sleep.
